Singapore and Malaysia have reaffirmed the need to deepen cooperation in areas of shared interest, including food security and energy.
Singaporean Foreign Ministry (MFA) said the commitment was initiated during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s courtesy call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Monday.
Tharman is currently on an inaugural state visit to Malaysia from July 12 to 15.
MFA added that the two leaders also exchanged views on geopolitical developments, including the implications of the unfolding situation in West Asia.
“Both President Tharman and Prime Minister Anwar have reassured the importance of upholding international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and safeguarding freedom of navigation,” was reported in a statement on Tuesday.
Tharman and his wife, Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, were accorded a state welcoming ceremony at Istana Negara and received by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia on Monday.
On Tuesday, the president also had an audience with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and met Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
“During these engagements, the two sides discussed potential areas of collaboration, including in technical and vocational education, climate adaptation and flood mitigation, and the growth of start-ups. President Tharman welcomed more exchanges between Singapore and Selangor,” the ministry added.
