Akkamage is one those epic Malaysian songs that resonates with most of us Tamil speakers. From being blared on the speakers at Batu Caves during Thaipusam to head banging at Minnal pub, every one of us has our own nostalgic experience with this song.
The song was originally sung by The Keys, a Tamil rock band back in the day helmed by Darkkey Nagaraja. With his signature red coat and unctuous shoulder length curls, Darkkey is no stranger to the local Tamil scene. He even made our hearts skip a beat when he appeared on Kabali’s Ulagam Oruvannukuda song.
In conjunction with the Tamil New Year this year, Seventh Heaven Media Works and Superfly Music have produced a phenomenal cover of Akkamage. This cover that’s sung by Sundar sees Sabarinath and GMG on guitars.
This song appears to be the first of many episodes on what we hope is a series of covers, aptly named Teh Tarik Satu. Stylomannavan hosts this episode.
The cover itself was nothing short of fantastic. It’s one of those lilting songs that would accompany the listener on a rainy night. We love how Sundar’s raspy voice does this acoustic version justice. The lyrics are more appreciable, and are quite witty too! While we really enjoyed the original song, this cover stands on its own with ease. This is one of those slow rock songs that we would listen to along with Kashmir Stone’s Rozana.
Great job, guys! We are waiting in anticipation for the next episode!
