Are you a fan of films that present a range of perspectives that not only sharpens your mind but also raises a slew of questions? Then you’ve come to the right place. A team of five has created an experimental film called ‘SKIN’. The film depicts an exploration of culture, race, bodies, and identity through dance, theatre, music, and film, which was performed and produced by a multi-disciplinary Malaysian artist team.
The Team
‘SKIN’ is an experimental film by Luvenia Kalia and Theyvapaalan S Jayaratnam in collaboration with Thinakkaaran Thamilchelvam, Quin Ooi, and Santosh Logandran which is funded by The Cultural Economy Development Agency Malaysia, CENDANA.
Luvenia Kalia is a multidisciplinary artist whose primary medium is movement. She has a Diploma in Dance from Lasalle College of the Arts Singapore and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Slippery Rock University, with a concentration in Performance and Choreography.
Theyvapaalan S Jayaratnam, on the other hand, is a multidisciplinary artist who works in theatre, photography, and film. He is also a performance and media graduate from Sunway University.
On the film production front, the team has an amazing music director, Santosh Logandran. He has performed all over the globe with multiple artists, including in Europe and Indonesia with Malaysian sweetheart Zee Avi, in Cambodia with Cambodia’s Popstar Laura Mam and in China with his band Nadir.
Quin Ooi is the film’s editor, and she has extensive experience producing, filming, and editing in a variety of genres, including film, documentaries, corporate, experimental, and digital.
Finally, Thinakkaaran Thamilchelvam is the man behind the camera in this film. He has filmed over 100 weddings all over the world and has revolutionised the industry with his artistic vision.
