Malaysians are conquering education, sports, and now the realm of fashion!
Last year, Malaysian-born model Vanizha Vasanthanathan rocked Milan Fashion Week 2022. This year, incredibly talented Malaysian-born designer, Gurdip Kaur d/o Jaspal Singh is set to represent Malaysia in the New York Couture Fashion Week happening in 2024.
Gurdip is greeted by the magic door after taking home the Best Fashion Designer Award 2023 at New York Couture Fashion Week, which was held in Malaysia on the February 25, 2023.
The founder of GypsyKorn Atelier, Gurdip Kaur shared with WOB about her remarkable triumph and also about her next venture in New York.
“It’s absolutely unbelievable for me! I felt shocked and grateful to the community and the judges and I’m so glad that I was finally recognised by the fashion world.” she says, noting that it was a scary experience for her to be on a platform amongst other senior designers.
Further explaining, she said, “I didn’t take this as a competition, and instead, I wanted to make a statement on what my brand is and who I am – that was the only thing running through my head being a fairly new young designer to the industry,”
However, it has not been an easy road for her. She addressed how she had to deal with being stereotyped by the community because of her tattoos and piercings.
“I want all other designers out there who are going through a similar journey to never give up and to know that what you dream is possible if you really set your mind to it”, the Penangnite said.
Gurdip has dressed many local artists, including Maruxa Lynd for the Northern Music Festival 2022, Late Night Frequency for Anugerah Indie Muzik 2023, and KVEN DAVÉ for his Fantasy music video. She is also excited about her current project, a 6-piece collection designed together with Sekumpulan Orang Gila, a Malaysian modern-rock band.
She wants to emphasize that creativity in Malaysia is not just confined to major brands as an independent designer. She thinks that this nation is home to many creative people who ought to be recognised and seen, including musicians, artists, and fashion designers.
“Winning this opportunity would not only be a chance for me to express my own creativity but also to inspire other struggling independent designers.” the designer expressed.
I believe that working independently is harder compared to having a team of professionals, but with hard work and determination, we can make it. – Gurdip
“I want to start a revolution in Malaysia, encouraging others to shamelessly put themselves out there and not care what others think”, the young lass stated.
She believes that we should always think beyond the box and aim for international recognition, even if Malaysia is known as a conservative country.
Good luck Gurdip, and remember to “BE A UNICORN AND FLY” as you rock the stage in the coming venture of yours!
