Born on September 7, 1951, as Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail in a village near Vaikom, Mammootty would grow to become one of the most prolific actors in Tamil and Malayalam cinema who has managed to bring out a diverse, intimate, and individual performance for every role he plays on screen.

Mammootty has delivered some exceptional and incredible performances in his lifetime and has both Tamil and Malayalam fans deeply captivated by the breath of his work. Here are a few of his most unforgettable and mesmerising performances in Tamil cinema.

This 1991 Mani Ratnam direction saw both Rajinikanth and Mammootty sharing an equal screen presence that allured and bewitched audiences worldwide. These are two of the most celebrated and astounding actors in Tamil and Malayalam coming together to deliver one of the most momentous films in Tamil film history. The story, which is a redux of the Mahabharata, a famous Hindu epic, tells the tale of friendship and loyalty. The complexity of both Rajini’s and Mammootty’s performances is truly the spine of the film; both the legendary actors have managed to express their own individual flair to the film while also democratically being symbiotic with one another’s artistry.

Kandukondain Kandukondain is director Rajiv Menon’s seminal masterpiece of a film that contextualises wealth, love, beauty, and pragmaticism. The film is a wonderful and creative adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, which revolves around the construct of marriage and wealth in regency-era England, which the filmmaker aptly adapted to a Tamil context. Mammootty’s performance as an army veteran who would evolve from his cynicism to becoming more sentimental and empathetic was beautifully and achingly portrayed, and his chemistry with Aishwarya Rai was also very mature, respectful, and intimate.
Peranbu

Peranbu is an award-winning film that has been hailed as one of director Raam’s best works. It stars Mammootty, Anjali, and several other amazing actors who come together to deliver this heartbreaking and unbearable tale of the perplexing and painful nature of love. This film and Mammootty’s subtle and agonising performance of a single father and a painfully lonely man was a necessary cinematic explorations of life and loss. The exceptional element of the film is the utterly natural way in which every emotion is detailed and expressed. The life and beating heart of this film palpitates through every scene and every character in this tremendously tender work.

Mammootty’s artistry not only entertains the public but informs them very intimately and profoundly about the complexities of the human condition. Apart from the multiple awards, accolades, and acknowledgements that he has received, Mammootty has been graced with an even greater gift, which is the unyielding love and adoration of his fans. This great actor’s artistic and emotional contributions to the world of cinema will never be forgotten; as long as art lives on, so shall his glory be remembered with it.
