The Sri Marathandavar Temple, nestled in the heart of Maran, is a sacred haven dedicated to Murugan, affectionately known as Marathandavar. As devotees enter the temple grounds, they are greeted by the divine aura of Lord Murugan, whose benevolent presence is felt throughout the sacred space. The Maran Sri Marathandavar Temple holds an annual Panguni Uthiram festival that distinguishes it as a focal point of reverence for devotees of Lord Murugan. Despite the multitude of Murugan temples scattered across Malaysia, the Marathandavar temple has earned a unique reputation for its grand observance of the Panguni Uthiram festival.
This annual event attracts fervent worshippers not only from the local vicinity but also from various states across Malaysia. Renowned for its distinctiveness and spiritual significance, the festival at Marathandavar temple is marked by vibrant ceremonies, intricate rituals, and a joyous atmosphere. Datuk K. Tamilselvan, the esteemed chairman of the Maran Sri Marathandavar Temple, has announced that an impressive turnout of 300,000 devotees is anticipated to participate in the upcoming Panguni Uthiram Festival. The festival is scheduled to take place on the 24th and 25th of March 2024 within the sacred precincts of the Marathandavar Temple.
Regrettably, over the past three years, the Panguni Uthiram Festival at the Maran Sri Marathandavar Temple has not been celebrated on a grand scale. Particularly last year, extensive restoration work was undertaken within the temple premises, including the successful completion of the Kumbabishegam ceremony. However, with anticipation and enthusiasm, the temple is now poised to host the 93rd Panguni Uthiram Festival in a remarkably grand manner.
The Maran Sri Marathandavar Temple is set to host special prayers from 15th March till 26th March as part of the lead-up to the highly anticipated Panguni Uthiram Festival. The culmination of these spiritual observances is scheduled for Monday, March 25, when the fervor and devotion will reach its pinnacle. Thousands of devotees are expected to converge upon the temple grounds during this auspicious occasion, bearing milk pots and kavadis as symbolic offerings to fulfill their religious obligations.
Significantly, a momentous event unfolded yesterday as the Maran Sri Marathandavar Temple installed a majestic 33 feet Vel within its sacred precincts. This ceremonial installation not only symbolizes the embodiment of divine energy and protection associated with Lord Murugan but also sets the bar high for an extraordinary Panguni Uthiram celebration this year.

The temple administration is diligently coordinating all arrangements to ensure the convenience of the devotees attending the festival. A particular emphasis is being placed on the safety of those visiting the temple, with the deployment of hundreds of police officers to maintain security. Additionally, temporary shops will be set up within the temple premises for the duration of the festival, adding to the overall festive atmosphere. These proactive measures reflect the commitment of the temple authorities to create a secure and enjoyable environment for worshippers during this significant occasion.
Every year, devotees from the Batu Caves temple embark on a pilgrimage to Maran in celebration of this festival. In the upcoming event, 1,500 pilgrims organized into 12 groups will walk to Marathandavar temple. These devotees are requested to ensure their safety. Additionally, on March 24th at 8pm, a bhajan session led by Kumar of the Sri Ganga Music Group will take place, enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the occasion. This marks a significant resurgence of the festive tradition, promising a joyous and spiritually enriching experience for devotees after a hiatus of subdued celebrations due to the recent restoration efforts.
