Undergoing a restructuring process, MITRA aims to realign its focus towards high-impact programmes for the Indian community. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang stressed the necessity of this shift, particularly as MITRA now operates under the National Unity Ministry. He highlighted constraints within the 2021 Indian Community Action Plan (PTMI) as a driving force behind this review.
A detailed study by Pemandu Associates, a consulting firm, revealed that only six out of 23 PTMI strategies fall under MITRA’s jurisdiction. Hence, the workshop seeks to synchronise these matters with MITRA’s mandate. Minister Dagang, speaking at the launch of the two-day roadmap workshop, underscored the importance of this initiative, refuting claims that it’s a waste of time.
The workshop convened relevant stakeholders, representatives from public and private agencies, and religious organisations to deliberate on MITRA’s mandates. These include addressing poverty, citizenship and documentation issues, temples and religious affairs, and women’s welfare.
Minister Dagang reiterated the importance of the workshop review despite criticism from Makkal Sakti Party president Dato Seri RS Thanenthiran, who found it demeaning to the Indian community. Asserting the necessity of constructive feedback, Dagang highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing concerns while advancing inclusivity and progress.
