The Met Gala is the world’s most prestigious fashion event. It’s a fundraising event held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City and organized by Vogue.

Every year, celebrities, fashion icons, and artists gather to showcase their most extravagant and avant-garde looks, following the theme of the year at the Met Gala, which takes place in New York City on the first Monday of May.

The Met Gala invites personalities from a variety of professional fields, including fashion, cinema, television, music, business, sports, social media, and politics — individuals who are culturally relevant to society. Fashion designers create eye-popping and unique looks for each artist, ensuring the camera flashes capture their attention-grabbing attire. Until the artist arrives that evening, the guest list for the event usually remains top secret, leaving attendees in suspense about who will make an appearance.

This year’s Met Gala 2024 celebrated the new exhibition titled ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’. The dress code for the event was ‘The Garden Of Time’.

Sabyasachi is a highly admired Indian fashion designer who holds a special place in Bollywood’s heart. His creations are adored by celebrities, with his wedding lehengas being particularly cherished. It’s a common sight to see Indian brides gleaming in Sabyasachi attire on their special day. Recognized for his talent, he has earned accolades such as the ‘Most Outstanding Young Designer of India’. Not only is he a favorite among Bollywood stars, but he has also lent his creative touch to costumes in Sanjay Leela Bhansali films.

The designer has his own label, ‘Sabyasachi’, and owns stores in many places such as Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Hyderabad, and even New York. Sabyasachi epitomizes Indian fashion, with his designs effortlessly enhancing the beauty and grace of the wearer. While the Met Gala takes place every year, we eagerly anticipate the appearance of our Indian artists. So far, the only Indian artists to attend the red carpet have been Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, and Isha Ambani.

This year, Sabyasachi made history by not only designing a look for actress Alia Bhatt, but also by marking her second appearance at the Met Gala. This time, the theme was ‘The Garden of Time’, and Alia flaunted a stunning Sabyasachi floral saree. Her entire outfit exuded breathtaking elegance and glamor, unmistakably showcasing Sabyasachi’s signature style. He brought Indian culture to the heart of Manhattan City, making her entire look beautiful.

Alia’s saree was custom made with hand embroidered with silk floss, beads, sequins, semi precious stones and glass beads. Her blouse was also hand crafted with emeralds, pearls, tourmalines and multi colored sapphires.

Before her appearance on the Met, Alia was interviewed by Vogue and she said,

” What drew me to this look was the sheer audacity of how it merges traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde aesthetics. Sabyasachi, known for his dedication to bringing old-world charm and modern sophistication together, seemed like the perfect choice to encapsulate the theme of this year’s Met Gala”.

Moreover, he wasn’t merely a designer for the actress; Sabyasachi himself made his debut by walking the red carpet. He made history as ‘The First Indian Fashion Designer’ to appear at the Met Gala.

Sabyasachi looked effortlessly stylish for the occasion, showcasing his impeccable taste in fashion. He made a bold fashion statement by wearing an embroidered cotton duster coat layered with tourmalines from his iconic Sabyasachi Resort 2024 collection, paired with a classic white shirt and beige pants. The stunning collection of tourmalines, pearls, emeralds, and diamonds from the Sabyasachi High Jewellery brand combined in his attire. He completed the ensemble with a matching belt, stylish shades, and well-groomed brown shoes. His entire outfit exuded a royal and classy vibe.

From Bollywood celebrities to Hollywood stars, his creations have been adorned by icons across the globe, reflecting a harmonious fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary flair. Sabyasachi’s historic moment serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring designers from diverse cultures, showcasing fashion’s ability to transcend cultural borders and unite people from all walks of life in an industry often criticized for its lack of representation.

As the curtains close on yet another unforgettable Met Gala, Sabyasachi’s debut on the red carpet will be remembered as a groundbreaking moment in the annals of fashion history.
