The Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM) reports that private hospitals in the Klang Valley are ready to help patients awaiting cardiac surgery at the Sultan Idris Shah Hospital (HSIS) Heart Centre in Serdang, Selangor.
In a statement, APHM President Dr. Kuljit indicated that if public hospitals are unable to treat patients in need of immediate cardiac surgery, they may be transferred to private hospitals. He stated that there are six to eight private hospitals in the Klang Valley that are manned by senior cardiac thoracic surgeons and have state-of-the-art operating rooms for heart surgery.
Patients who are unable to wait for surgery appointments might make use of these facilities. Given the difficulties at HSIS, Kuljit stated that private hospitals were prepared to assist the government, pointing to the effective patient transfer that occurred during the Covid-19 outbreak.
He claimed that a public-private partnership deal with the health ministry covered the cost of surgery at private hospitals, and that agreement could be expanded to include more private facilities if necessary.
In order to help with the patient backlog, he also urged the government to hire foreign nurses more quickly. He pointed out that the health ministry had waived the requirement for these nurses to hold a post-basic certification in order for them to work locally last year.
Dzulkefly Ahmad, the health minister, announced yesterday that fixes to problems discovered in the surgery complex at HSIS would be completed by next month.Dzulkefly stated that emergency patients would be referred to other clinics, including the National Heart Institute.
The Selangor Health Department acknowledged technical challenges at the heart surgery complex, such as electrical supply problems and high humidity levels.Four operating theaters at the cardiac institution, which opened less than two years ago, were reported to be inoperable.
