The Evergreen Star, Celebrating Priyamani’s Remarkable Journey In Indian Cinema

Priya Vasudev Mani Iyer, popularly known as Priyamani was born on 4th June 1984 in Bangalore, Karnataka. She hails from a Tamil Iyer family with roots in Kerala. Priyamani’s entry into the film industry was marked by her sheer passion for acting and her determination to make a mark in the world of cinema.

The Actress completed her schooling in Bangalore and went on to pursue her graduation in psychology from Bishop Cotton Women’s College. While still in college, she began modeling for print advertisements, which eventually led to her entry into films. In 2003, she made her Telugu debut, Evare Atagaadu.

She is now all over the Indian Cinema from Kollywood to Bolllywood. Priyamani has acted in multiple language films. Her role the captured her to fame was “Paruthiveeran”.

Paruthiveeran (2007)

Priyamani’s portrayal of Muthazhagu in Paruthiveeran is one of her most memorable performances. Directed by Ameer Sultan, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, starring Karthi as the male lead role. The film is a rural drama that showcases the life and struggles of two lovers who elopes against their family. For the plot and acting the film was a blockbuster.

Priyamani’s raw and emotional performance earned her several awards including National Film Award for Best Actress, cementing her place as a formidable talent in the industry. The actress received acclaims for her powerful and strong performance as a Madurai girl.

Thirakkatha (2008)

Directed by Ranjith, Priyamani played the role of Malavika, an actress whose life story is explored through a film within the film. Her nuanced performance, depicting the highs and lows of a film star’s life, was widely appreciated and showcased her ability to bring depth to her characters. Along with Priyamani, the film also starred Pritiviraj and Anoop Menon as the lead roles.

The story revolves around Akhbar Ahmed (Prithiviraj), an film director decides to direct his second film based on an actress named Malavika an legendary popular actress. He tries to find for her as the actress whereabouts is unknown. As he looks for the actress, he finds a diary and letters which tells the story of Malavika and her husband Ajaya Chandran.

Thirakkatha has won multiple awards including National Film Award for Best Feature Film Malayalam and Filmfare Award South For Best Actress.

Raavanan (2010)

Directed by Legendary Mani Ratnam, Raavanan is a modern adaptation of the Indian epic Ramayana. The film starred Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Prithiviraj, Karthik and Priyamani. Raavanan is a A.R Rahman musical film.

The film follows Veeraiya (Vikram), a tribal leader who kidnaps Ragini (Aishwarya Rai) the wife of Dev Prakash Subramaniam (Prithviraj), a police officer. Veera seeks revenge against Dev, who has been targeting his community. As the story unfolds, Ragini finds herself caught in a complex web of emotions, realizing that Veera is not entirely the ruthless villain she thought him to be. The film delves into themes of morality, justice, and the blurred lines between good and evil.

Priyamani played the role of Vennila, the sister of the protagonist Veeraiya. Her intense performance added significant emotional weight to the film, earning her critical acclaim adding depth and emotion to the film’s narrative.

Ninaithale Inikkum (2009)

This romantic drama directed by G. N. R. Kumaravelan saw Priyamani in the role of Meera. The film is a remake of the Malayalam hit “Classmates”. Ninaithale Inikum was a film that starred Prithiviraj, Shakthi Vasu, Karthik Kumar, Anuja Iyer and Priyamani. Vijay Anthony composed the music in the film. A well known song that featured Priyamani and Prithiviraj, ” Pia Pia”.

The film was about a group of college friends meets up for a reunion.  As all of them delve into the memories from the college times, several dark secrets are revealed. Priyamani’s perfomance was lauded for its charm and emotional resonance.

Chaarulatha (2012)

In Chaarulatha, directed by Pon Kumaran, Priyamani took on the challenging role of conjoined twins. The horror drama required her to portray two distinct characters with different personalities, a feat she accomplished with great skill. Her dual performance was both convincing and compelling, further establishing her versatility as an actress.

The film revolves around Chaaru and Latha are conjoined twins who falls in love with Ravi. But Ravi falls in love with Chaaru. But tragedy strikes when one of the twin sister dies. Chaaru then lives alone and then gets haunted by her sister’s spirit, which seeks revenge and reveals dark secrets from their past. The film explores themes of love, betrayal and the supernatural with a gripping narrative that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

Chaarulatha received several accolades for its unique storyline and Priyamani’s exceptional performance. The film won the Best Actress Award for Priyamani at the Filmfare Awards South. Additionally, it garnered appreciation for its direction, screenplay, and special effects, cementing its place as a notable entry in the horror gen

The actress has been in several Hindi Films too. She featured as a dancer in Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express with Shah Rukh Khan dancing for “One Two Three Four”. The actress was also recently in Atlee’s Jawan which was released last year. She has also acted in Article 370 and Maidaan.

Upcoming Films

Priyamani’s next projects are ” Quotation Gang”, a crime thriller film starring Sunny Leone, Jackie Shroff and Sara Arjun. And another film, “Khaimara”.
