British Tamil Uma Kumaran, representing the Labour Party, has won the seat as the Member of Parliament for Stratford and Bow in the UK’s recent general election held on July 4, 2024. She secured victory with 19,145 votes.
Ms. Kumaran, born in East London and raised in Harrow, comes from parents who fled Sri Lanka to escape the conflict. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen Mary University and began her career in government with the NHS in December 2007.
Previously, Ms. Kumaran worked for London’s current Mayor, Sadiq Khan, in the NHS for approximately 14 months. She later transitioned to become a parliamentary researcher and caseworker for MP Dawn Butler, collaborating with various Labour Party legislators, despite an unsuccessful bid in the 2010 local elections.
In a recent interview with the Tamil Guardian, Ms. Kumaran emphasized the contributions of the Tamil community to British society and spoke proudly of her Tamil heritage. She highlighted the significant roles Tamils play across various sectors such as the NHS, economy, business, arts, culture, and public services.
Ms. Kumaran has served as the Deputy Director of Parliamentary Affairs for Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer for over 18 months. She has also engaged with international bodies, including the United Nations, scientists, and activists, in efforts to combat global climate change. “Every role I’ve taken on has had a clear purpose,” she remarked to Tamil Guardian.
Following her electoral triumph, Uma Kumaran expressed her gratitude on her social media platform, X, thanking her supporters and the Labour Party for their trust. She pledged to advocate diligently for her constituents as their dedicated voice in Parliament.
