The Malaysian government is set to launch the “Less Sugar, Lower Price” campaign, aiming to encourage healthier eating habits by reducing sugar intake. Announced by Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Fuziah Salleh, the initiative seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption.
A Collaborative Effort
This campaign, developed in collaboration with restaurant associations and industry representatives, is designed to promote a healthier lifestyle while reducing the financial burden of medical treatments related to sugar-induced diseases.
According to the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey, 15.6% of Malaysian adults have been diagnosed with diabetes. The campaign addresses these concerns, highlighting the need for change as Malaysians consume an average of 41.6kg of sugar annually—more than double the recommended amount.
Industry Support
The initiative has received positive feedback from stakeholders, including the Malaysian Indian Restaurant Owners Association, Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietor’s General Association, and Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association.
Previously, the government imposed a sugar tax on sweetened beverages. The upcoming campaign builds on past efforts, aligning with strategic plans to reduce sugar consumption by 2025.
By promoting reduced sugar intake, the campaign aims to foster long-term health benefits for Malaysians, encouraging them to adopt healthier dietary practices.
