The Olympic dream faced a setback for Malaysia’s national badminton women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, as they missed a spot in the Paris Olympics semi finals. In a hard-fought match, Pearly and Thinaah were defeated by China’s duo, Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan, with scores of 12-21, 21-18, 15-21.

The semi-final clash was intense, showcasing the resilience and skill of the Malaysian pair, ranked world No. 12. Despite a valiant effort and a close call they were defeated by the world No. 1 Chinese pair, who secured their ticket to the final. The match began with Chen and Jia dominating the first game, swiftly taking it 21-12. However, Pearly and Thinaah staged a remarkable comeback in the second game. The deciding game saw a neck-and-neck battle, but the Chinese pair edged ahead, clinching the game 21-15 and sealing their victory.

Though this defeat ends their quest for the gold medal, Pearly and Thinaah still have a chance to make history by winning a bronze medal for Malaysia. They will face either Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning of China or Japan’s Matsuyama Nami-Shida Chiharu in the bronze medal match.

This semi-final performance, despite the loss, is a testament to Pearly and Thinaah’s tenacity and skill on the global stage. Malaysian fans continue to rally behind them, hopeful for a podium finish in their next match. The duo’s journey at the  Paris Olympics has already marked a significant milestone for Malaysian badminton, inspiring future generations of athletes. Despite being injured, their hard work is truly inspiring, as they kept giving a comeback throughout the game, it truly makes us feel proud as Malaysians.
