After several delays, Malaysia’s Electric Train Service (ETS) is set to extend their operations from Gemas to Johor Bahru, with the launch anticipated in August this year.

Enhanced Connectivity and Features

The completion of this RM9.5 billion project will significantly reduce travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru to approximately 4.5 hours, a substantial improvement from the current 7 hour journey by diesel train. The electrified double track rail will accommodate speeds up to 140 km/h with stops at Segamat, Kluang, Kulai and JB Sentral.

The newly introduced ETS3 train sets boast modern convenience including WIFI connectivity, USB charging ports, and comfortable seating arrangements, enhancing the overall passenger experience.

Project Challenges and Strategic Importance

Initiated in 2011, the west coast rail electrification program faced multiple days since construction began in 2017, due to electricity supply testing issues and land acquisition challenges, Despite these setbacks, the Ministry of Transport and the Johor state government have maintained the project’s strategic priority status.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has emphasized the importance of this project alongside with the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is scheduled to commence operation by January 2027.

Anticipated Impact

Upon completion, the Gemas-Johor Bahru ETS extension is expected to serve approximately 3000 passengers daily, offering a comfortable alternative to the four hour drive between the two cities. The existing ETS routes have already demonstrated high demand with tickets, especially for the Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh service, consistently selling out within few weeks

The upcoming launch of the ETS extension to Johor Bahru marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s rail infrastructure development, promising enhanced connectivity and convenience for travelers.
