In a inspiring show that proves education has no age limit. 58 year old, R.Baskaran and his youngest daughter B.Dannya, made a remarkable achievement, after scoring excellent results in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations. Baskaran proudly secures 7A’s while Dannya scored 11A’s.

Baskaran who works as a medical supervisor at Penang General Hospital decided to sit for SPM along with his daughter to demonstrate that lifelong learning is achievable, regardless of age. Already a holder of a Bachelor’s degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), a Master’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), and a Doctorate in Business Administration, Baskaran felt compelled to revisit the foundation level of education. His aim was not to only challenge himself academically but also support his daughter through her own important academic milestone.

Their preparation was a shared journey. Studying side by side at home, they turned to online resource like YouTube tutorials for guidance on exam techniques and complex subjects. Whenever either of them struggled to understand a topic, they would rely on each other for help and when they both are unsure, Dannya would seek help and clarification from her teachers. Their collaborative efforts turned studying into a meaningful family experience, bonding father and daughter even closer.

“When my daughter didn’t understand something, I’d help her and when I struggled, she’ll help me. If we were both stuck, she would ask her teacher for help”, said Baskaran.

For Baskaran, this was also a personal mission. When he first sat for SPM back in 1984, he had only manage a Grade Two. Determined to improve his earlier performance, he saw the 2024 examination a second chance, and grabbed it with determination. Both father and daughter sat for their exams at Bukit Mertajam High School. Their shared success highlights the importance of perseverance, the value of family support and the enduring power of education.

Baskaran hopes their story will inspire more people, especially today’s younger generation. To realise that with dedication, hard work and positive mindset, any goal is achievable, no matter the circumstance of life you are at.

“I place great importance on education and have always motivated my children to work hard for their future. If I can do it, they certainly can too, and I hope this journey becomes an inspiration to today’s youth”.

Their journey together is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to chase your dreams and sometimes, the greatest achievements are even more special when shared with the ones you love.
