Poovellaam Kettuppaar (PKP), written and directed by Karthik Shaamalan, is set to mark a new milestone in Malaysian Tamil cinema. Produced by Shaibha Vision and SciFilm, the film promises not just a gripping thriller but a deeply immersive psychological experience that challenges audiences to confront the fragility of their own realities.
A First in Malaysian Tamil Cinema
Breaking new ground, PKP is the first Malaysian Tamil film to be fully shot in anamorphic format, lending a distinct visual texture and cinematic depth rarely explored in the local industry. To heighten the sense of realism, the production team constructed a 5,000 square-foot forest set, designed not only as a backdrop but as a living, breathing environment that shapes the narrative.
Powerful Performances Across Generations
The film brings together a diverse ensemble cast, blending veterans and bold newcomers. The lineup includes Datin Sri Shaila V, Magen Vikadakavi, Yuvaraj Krishnasamy, Thashrra Aghonderan, “Kalai Maamanu” KS Maniam, CS Murugan, Noorul Haq, with Veronica Thomas, and Thaneswari Rajenthiran making their debut appearances. This mix of experience and fresh talent promises layered performances that capture the film’s emotional and psychological intensity.
More Than Just a Thriller
For Karthik Shaamalan, PKP goes beyond genre conventions.
“This film is a reflection of how fragile our realities are, and how easily the human mind can blur the line between truth and illusion. The story builds on silence, shadows, and hidden emotions, asking haunting questions: How much of what we remember is real? How far will we go to protect the secrets we carry?”, he said.
Rather than simply presenting a narrative, PKP aims to immerse it’s audience, to evoke unease, to spark self-reflection, and to leave a lingering impact long after the credits roll.
A Story Rooted in Humanity
At it’s core, PKP is about people, their fears, sacrifices and the battles they conceal. It’s a story of survival, identity, and the psychological depths rarely explored in Malaysian cinema. With music by Shameshan Mani Maran, cinematography by Thinesh Kumar (TK), students by Saha, and make-up by Abirami (Aby), and Giri, every detail of the film has been carefully crafted to elevate it’s authenticity and immersive quality.
By combining technical innovation, bold storytelling, and daring performances, Poovellaam Kettuppaar positions itself as more than a thriller, it is an emotional and psychological journey, signaling an exciting new chapter in Malaysian Tamil cinema.
