India makes a historic achievement in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2026. The team secured their first gold medal, and recorded the highest finish till date by placing 6 among 67 countries.
The competition took place in France, and had 260 students participating from all over the world.
Since 2015, India has been taking part as a guest nation. This year they delivered a strongest performance, which reflects India’s growing presence in global mathematics competitions.
Shreya Shantanu Mundhada from Mumbai, who led the team, won the gold medal and got a joint third place globally.

Sanjana Chacko from Kerala won a silver medal and Shivani Barath Kumar from Tamil Nadu won a bronze medal. Another team member, Shrimoyee Bera from Kolkata also gave a strong performance, which increased India’s overall ranking.
Apart from medals, this achievement shows the strength of India’s Olympia training system.
Institutions like Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research played an important role in growing young talents.

With the guidance from former Olympians, Training programmes like the Indian Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) and EGMO Training Camp (EGMOTC), has helped to build a strong line-up of competitive students.
India’s performance at EGMO 2026 also shows the increasing participation and success among girls in mathematics. Which is a field where gender gaps exist globally.
The historic win is a positive movement, with more young women stepping out and excelling at the highest level.
