In a heartfelt tribute to commemorate the tenth year since the passing of the revered lawyer, politician, and humanitarian Karpal Singh, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke unveiled plans for the Karpal Singh Scholarship. This initiative aims to honour Karpal Singh’s significant contributions to Malaysian society, particularly in advocating for justice, by providing support to law students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
During the poignant remembrance event held at the PJ Live Arts Theatre, attended by approximately 400 individuals, memories of Karpal Singh’s life, career, and unwavering commitment to justice were shared and cherished. Secretary-General Anthony Loke, in announcing the scholarship, highlighted its dual purpose: to honour Karpal Singh’s legacy and to encourage aspiring legal minds to pursue the study of law, in the hopes of a new generation of lawyers to bring forth a more democratic Malaysian society in the future.
With an initial annual allocation of RM100,000, the Karpal Singh Scholarship will primarily target law students facing financial hardship. To ensure the effective implementation and management of the scholarship program, Bangi Member of Parliament Syahredzan Johan has been appointed to lead a dedicated committee. This committee will be responsible for devising selection guidelines, establishing a panel of public trustees, and defining evaluation criteria for scholarship applicants. Crucially, Loke emphasised that there would be no affiliation requirement with the DAP for scholarship recipients, underscoring the programme’s commitment to meritocracy and inclusivity.
Among the attendees of Karpal’s memorial were prominent figures such as DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng, DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, and DAP vice chairman Teresa Kok, alongside Karpal Singh’s family members, including his son, Gobind Singh Deo, daughter, Sangeet Kaur Deo, and wife, Gurmit Kaur.
During the event, poignant memories of Karpal Singh were shared by esteemed panelists, including former high court and court of appeal judge Datuk Seri Hishamudin Yunus, former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, and human rights lawyer Datuk Malik Imtiaz Sarwar.
Karpal Singh’s unforgettable legacy as a passionate advocate for justice and a stalwart politician, affectionately known as “the Tiger of Jelutong,” continues to inspire generations. His tragic passing on April 17, 2014, marked a profound loss for Malaysia, but initiatives like the Karpal Singh Scholarship ensure that his spirit lives on, nurturing the next generation of democratic minds committed to upholding justice and equality in this nation.
