National badminton men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik delivered a remarkable performance to win the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, overcoming Denmark’s world No. 2 pair Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen. The Malaysian duo displayed immense determination and resilience to secure a 16-21, 22-20, 21-19 victory, defending their bronze from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The match started as an equally contested, with Denmark managing to open a four-point lead at 12-8 in the first game. Despite a strong effort by Aaron and Wooi Yik to catch up, they eventually conceded the first game at 16-21. However, the second game saw a turnaround. Trailing 20-17, the world’s no.3 , Malaysian duo fought hard for four match points and won 22-20.
In the third game, Aaron and Wooi Yik initially took a commanding 10-6 lead and extended their advantage to 13-7. The Danish pair fought back to level the scores at 17-17 and 19-19, but the Malaysians held their nerve to win the final points and secure the bronze medal.
This victory marks Malaysia’s first medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 and lifts the spirits of the badminton camp, which had been struggling to reach the finals in other events. The medal is particularly significant as it reaffirms Aaron and Wooi Yik’s position as one of the top men’s doubles pairs in the world.
Adding to the excitement, Malaysia has another opportunity to secure a bronze medal in badminton. Singles star Lee Zii Jia is set to face India’s Lakshya Sen in the men’s singles playoff on 5th August, after being defeated by world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the semi-final.
In the men’s doubles final, China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang will compete against defending Olympic champions Lee Yang and Wang Chi Lin of Taiwan, promising more thrilling badminton action. The resilience and skill demonstrated by Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik have not only brought pride to Malaysia but have also ignited hopes for more successes in the remaining events of the Paris Olympics 2024.
