The government announced an RM80 million initiative to address over crowding in schools nationwide with plans to construct 91 new classrooms in 70 over schools.
Deputy Works Minister Ahmad Maslan said this project will be carried out through collaboration between the Ministry of Works Malaysia and the Ministry of Education Malaysia.
The classrooms will be built using modular construction method, and the industrialised building system (IBS) allowing fast completion. The project falls under the government’s “Quick Win” initiative, aimed to deliver rapid and visible improvements.
A total of 70 contractors is appointed to carry out the works, which includes school in Sabah, Sarawak. Ahmad said that the initiative is especially important for schools in urban areas, that is populated.
He highlighted that similar projects are implemented in Johor Bahru where 12 classrooms construction projects were introduced to cope with the growing population in recent years.
The new nationwide rollout is expected to further ease pressures on existing school facilities and improve overall learning environment.
Ahmad also said that steps to support the contractors affected by rising diesel prices. Measures announced by Alexandra Nanta Linggi include expanding opportunities for small and medium contractors. This comes after the concerns raised by the Persatuan Kontraktor Melayu Malaysia which risked financial difficulties to thousands of contractors because of the increased operating expenses.
The classroom initiative reflects the governments dual focus on improving education infrastructure while ensuring sustainability within construction industry.
