In conjunction with Chithirai Pournami, which falls on May 1, 2026, the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has urged Hindu devotees to minimize the use of plastics while visiting temples for prayers. N. V. Subbarow, CAP’s Consumer and Environmental Education Officer, highlighted that large crowds are expected for this auspicious occasion, particularly at the Sri Thandayuthabani Temple in Teluk Intan, where approximately 100,000 devotees are anticipated to gather.

He noted that the increase in visitors will likely lead to a surge in food stalls operating around the temple areas, which are known to use plastic containers and cups. Subbarow emphasized that this could significantly contribute to environmental pollution if not addressed properly.
As a reminder, he called on food stall operators to switch to reusable plates and cups or to consider biodegradable packaging as an alternative. Meanwhile, devotees are encouraged to bring their own water bottles and utensils to help reduce plastic waste during the celebration.

The Consumers Association of Penang hopes that these reminders will encourage both food stall operators and devotees to adopt more sustainable practices, ensuring that the spiritual significance of Chithirai Pournami is observed in an environmentally conscious manner.
