In a meaningful step to honour cultural traditions, 27 underprivileged children took part in a special Hindu ear-piercing ceremony held at the Rokkumalai Sri Muniswarar Bathrakaliamman Temple in Penang.
Organized by the Penang Hindu Association (PHA) in collaboration with KRT Lorong Bukit Kukus, the event brought children from Kedah and Penang together. The children are from orphanages and b40 families. The initiative is to ensure that every child, regardless of background has to get the opportunity to experience important rites.
In Hindu culture, ear piercing is one of the major 16 sacraments, which symbols a child’s formal entry into the community. The ritual will have prayers and blessings for the child’s health, protection and future well-being.
PHA President Datuk P.Murugiah has said the programme was not just about carrying out a religious practice but to also create awareness among the younger generation on it’s deeper meaning. He said that many children from the underprivileged background are not given the chance to take part in such communities.

The ear piercing was performed by an “aasari” a traditional Hindu gold smith trained in customary methods. Each child was given a pair of 14-carat gold earings.
The children who joined the event are from a few welfare homes which includes Pertubuhan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Baty Grace in Kulim, the Children’s Protection Society of Penang, Penang Shan Children’s Home, and Pusat Jagaan Kamakshi.
They also gave additional support for the children, with each receiving RM100 vouchers to purchase traditional Indian attire, as well as goodie bags that has sweets and stationery. A photoshoot
The programme received positive feedback from the ones who attended with many hoping this will continue in the future
