According to Badrul Hisham Alias, director-general of the National Registration Department (NRD), the new MyKad will have 53 security elements, compared to the 23 found in the current version.
Among the new features are engraved with laser, ultraviolet (UV) elements, holograms, guiloche patterns, microtext, QR codes for enforcement purposes, and a chip with enhanced encryption technology. The introduction of the new MyKad shows the government’s effort to strengthen national identity security with the evolving technology and modern security challenges.
Badrul Hisham said the official launch date will be announced later by Ministry of Home Affairs, and that the NRD is fully prepared for it’s rollout. Apart from MyKad, updated versions of MyPoCA and MyTentera also expected to be launched next month.

While many Malaysians are curious about new functions, Badrul Hisham has cleared that the upgrade MyKad will not include the Touch ‘n Go feature. The card’s improvement is focused on identity verification mainly, enforcement use and stronger protection against forgery and misuse.
With new security and updated technology, the new MyKad is another step in Malaysia to move towards stronger digital and identity protection system.
