A total of 258 Indian undergraduate students from B40 families in Johor received laptops through Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA) Student Device Programme to support their higher education journey.
The initiative is by MITRA, under the Ministry of Human Resources, and aims to improve access to digital learning and ensure students from low-income backgrounds are not left behind in today’s technology driven education environment.
The laptop distribution ceremony was at University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and had students from UTM, University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and City University. Representing Human Resources Minister Dato’ Sri R.Ramanan, MITRA director-general Raveendran Nair said the distribution in Johor was completed according to schedule.
He said the programme will continue at other states in a transparent and organised manner to make sure assistance reaches to students who needs it the most. The Johor distribution is part of MITRA’s nationwide effort to give 3,000 new laptops to eligible Indian undergraduate students.
The programme is to help the gap between digital and provide students with tools needed to participate fully in their studies, especially as technology plays an increasingly important role in higher education. By providing laptops to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the initiative is to create more equal opportunities for academic success and future career development.
The Student Device Programme was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at University Malaya on 10th May 2026. In the launch, he praised MITRA’s commitment to have programmes. And announced an increase of allocation to RM150 Million, allowing it to continue supporting initiatives that benefits Malaysian Indian community.
The laptop is one of the few efforts to help students access quality education and make sure they have resources needed to succeed in their studies.
