The Social Security Organisation (Socso) and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which will provide social security coverage to around 4,500 film industry practitioners.

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim stated that this takes the coverage amount to RM104,850 for the 4,500 participants, or to RM232.80 for each beneficiary per year.

He stated that the government would shoulder 90% of each recipient’s Socso contributions, while Finas would pay the remaining 10%.

“Continuing this, any companies looking to renew their filming license with Finas must also make Socso contributions for crew members,” he stated during his remarks at the Socso-Finas signing here on Tuesday (April 23). Chief Executive Officers of Socso, Datuk Seri Dr. Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, and Finas, Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, signed the Memorandum of Understanding.

A standard contract demanding Socso donations from movie cast members and crew is in the works, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who was also in attendance.

This is a good effort to take this step toward helping those working in the arts industry. The standard contract is expected to be announced sometime in the middle of the year. Fahmi also added that Finas will be responsible for making the announcement.

Legislation governing the music industry, according to Fahmi, is also being developed. He added that sound engineers and other recording studio operators would also be involved.
