Indian tennis icons Leander Paes and Vijay Amritraj achieved a historic milestone as they were formally inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, marking the first time Asian players have received this prestigious honor. The ceremony where both players proudly raised the Indian Tricolour took place amidst a glamorous event.
Reflecting on his journey, Paes spoke fondly of his early days playing football and hockey before transitioning to tennis, following in the footsteps of his father, an Olympic hockey captain. “It’s the greatest honor of my life to share this stage with legends who have not only won Grand Slams and shaped our sport but also influenced the world we live in,” Paes remarked.
Amritraj, aged 70 and retired since 1993 after a successful career that included 15 ATP singles titles and reaching a career-high ranking of 18th in the world, expressed humility and gratitude upon joining the elite group in the Hall of Fame. “I am deeply honored to be part of this exclusive group that has brought glory to our sport,” Amritraj said. Beyond tennis, he has been involved in humanitarian causes, supported tennis events in India, and appeared in popular films like James Bond and Star Trek.
Both Paes and Amritraj have significantly contributed to Indian tennis, with Paes securing 18 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles and representing India in seven Olympics. His notable achievements include winning the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and completing career Grand Slams in both men’s and mixed doubles.
Acknowledging the support of his fellow countrymen, Paes thanked them for being his inspiration and strength through the highs and lows of his career. “Playing for 1.4 billion people could either be pressure or it could be the wind beneath your wings,” Paes reflected.
Their induction into the Hall of Fame not only celebrates their sporting achievements but also elevates India as the 28th nation represented in this esteemed institution. Both players stand as symbols of Asian excellence in tennis, proving that with determination and hard work, Grand Slam victories and global recognition are within reach for athletes from the region.
