Mogesh Sababathy Bagged The Prestigious Asean-India Youth Award 2023

Another year, another achievement by the UPM second-year Ph.D. student Mogesh Sababathy.

The Government of India in collaboration with India Foundation and  ASEAN Foundation organised the 4th ASEAN-India Youth Summit that took place from 12 February to 16 February 2023. Over 160 youth leaders were selected to explore new initiatives to enhance ASEAN and India’s physical, economic, digital, and socio-cultural connectivity. 

4th ASEAN-India Youth Summit theme this year is strengthening the ASEAN-India Partnership in the Indo-Pacific. Over 160 youth leaders were selected to explore new initiatives to enhance ASEAN and India’s physical, economic, digital, and socio-cultural connectivity. The Malaysian delegation consisted of 6 members, including Mogesh Sababathy, Hisyam, Loshenavane, Loshseni, Clerie Olivia, and Yaneetha Meena.

Mogesh Sababathy was the only Malaysian delegate to receive the prestigious ASEAN-India Youth Award for his achievements, leadership role, contributions, and impact on the community from his advocacy work, and his active participation throughout the summit. 

The 25-year-old said he is grateful for the award and persuades youths to step forward to effectively participate, particularly in governance and decision-making processes. 

At this event, the delegates were given an opportunity to present their ideas and perspectives. Malaysian delegates shared their views on how Malaysia has been playing a key role in strengthening ASEAN-India diplomatic relations in the Indo-Pacific context and the way forward particularly focusing on how Malaysia can work together with ASEAN and India in addressing shared challenges. 

Mogesh added that in his presentation he highlighted the Malaysian Prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s contribution to the importance of ASEAN to Malaysia is visible. The relationship we have within the region and that Malaysia has been playing a pivotal role since its establishment in contributing to the overall development and progress of ASEAN.

“I also pointed out two specific shared challenges between Malaysia and India that includes disaster risk reduction, adaptation, and mitigation of climate. As well as Malaysia’s action in putting food security as one of our top priorities, which provides the opportunity to deeper the cooperation between ASEAN-Malaysia-India through both new and existing mechanisms such as India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative”, added the environmentalist. 

Mogesh was also the first Malaysian to be named the finalist of the Commonwealth Youth Awards in 2021. Click HERE to read.
