For Jaya Rajamanikam, eldercare is not just a profession, its something more personal. With years of experience in education and healthcare, Jaya built a path filled with compassion, dignity, and meaningful human connection. Today as Age Care Sdn.Bhd and Legend Care Centre, her work continues to shape how families approach ageing and caregiving in Malaysia.
A Childhood That Decided Her Purpose
Jaya’s journey into geriatric healthcare started before her professional career. She was raised in Sungkai, Perak by her grandmother. And she witnessed the struggles of ageing without proper medical access, and awareness.

Her grandmother battled chronic illness, and pass away which left her an emotional impact. More than grief, it brought responsibility, and pushed her to understand the deeper gaps in eldercare, especially the lack of personalized attention and knowledge between families.

Turning a Need into a Solution
As she stepped into the field, Jaya noticed a similar issue among families. Many wanted to care for their elderly loved ones at home, but often gets overwhelmed, and unsure what to do. This gap between intention and proper care is the driving force behind the creation of Age Care Sdn.Bhd. Her goal is not to replace families, but to support with the right guidance and trained caregivers.

When we asked what inspired her to start Age Care Sdn.Bhd?
Q: What inspired you to establish Age Care Sdn. Bhd?

A: the inspiration came from a very real need that I witnessed in the community.. Age Care was formed to bridge that gap, to bring safe, skilled, and heart-centred caregiving into homes. It also gave me the opportunity to uplift the caregiving profession in Malaysia. With training, certification and structured standard, I wanted to empower caregivers to feel proud of their work and deliver care that touches both the body and heart.

Behind her professional achievements, there’s also a story of personal strength. At one point, Jaya found her navigating major transition, becoming a single mother to three children facing unexpected changes in her career. It was a period filled with uncertainty, but also one that made her rebuild and focus on her priority.
Q: Looking back, what were some of the biggest turning points in your career?

A: The turning point came at the period of me being a newly single mother with 3 children. Those years shaped my discipline, my empathy and my understanding of how crucial systems are. I had also experienced a unexpected change in my previous career as an academician which forced me to reconsider my priorities in life. Both those events solidified a drive in me to fully venture into this business line.

Growing Into Leadership
Stepping into leadership did not come without challenges. Balancing family responsibility while building a business needs to have a constant adjustment. Jaya had to develop confidence in her decisions, learn to manage uncertainty, and actively seek opportunity to grow.
When we asked, what’s the challenges she faced as a woman building a career in healthcare leadership. She said…
Q: What challenges did you face as a women building a career in healthcare leadership?

A: One of the biggest challenges was learning how to balance my personal life. That support system, combined with continuous learning and resilience, helped me to grow into the leader I am today.

Decision making also played a role for her. She realized that early leadership needed more than just passion, it needed clarity and common sense. Which she had to improve, and become more confident, decisive and grounded. She actively searched for growth, by attending seminars and conferences on business development and joined community initiatives and women empowerment programmes.

At Legend Care Centre, Jaya focused on complete approach to eldercare. She believes ageing is not just physical health, but emotional connection, identity and sense of belonging. This is how caregivers are trained, not to just perform task, but to build relationships and understand the needs to the person.

Looking Ahead: A Bigger Vision
Jaya’s work does not stop at what she has built till date. She visions expanding community based eldercare across Malaysia, specially in rural areas where support is limited.

At the same time, she wishes to introduce more specialized services and expand to other parts of Southeast Asia. Her vision reflects long-term commitment for having quality eldercare more accessible.

Creating Space for Women to Grow
Jaya’s passion for empowering women is from her own experiences. As she faced limitations and lack of encouragement earlier, she understands how difficult it is to be for women to step into leadership roles. Through programmes, she creates opportunity for women from all backgrounds to know their potential and build confidence.

Jaya believes that leadership is not about fitting into expectations but understanding people. She highlights qualities like empathy, patience and authenticity as important strengths, specially in healthcare.

When asked, what’s her philosophy on ageing. She said..
Q: What’s your philosophy on ageing gracefully?
A: To age gracefully is about living with purpose and dignity. Your twilight years are another connotation of your life’s story.

A Message to the Next Generation
For those entering the field, Jaya’s advice is grounded in sincerity. She is encouraging young people, especially women to approach geriatric care with patience and a open heart. While skills and qualifications are important, she believes real impact comes from compassion and willingness over time.
