Deputy National Unity Minister YB Yuneswaran called for greater efforts to strengthen mother-tongue proficiency, especially among young people. This is a way to promote better understanding between communities to reduce the spread of race, religion and royalty (3R) issues.

Many of the 3R-related discussion is seen on social media today and are mostly caused by lack of understanding different cultures, language and histories.

He explained that language is more than just a tool for communication. It is also community’s identity, heritage, and values, which helps people to understand their own background better while respecting others.

Language as a Bridge between Communities

YB Yuneswaran said that Malaysia has about 130 languages, reflecting the country’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity. He said diversity must be seen as Malaysia’s strength than a division.

According to him learning one’s mother language does not prevent a person from learning Bahasa Melayu or other languages. Instead it helps to gain deeper appreciation of their own culture while becoming open to understand other community.
