Deputy National Unity Minister YB Yuneswaran called for greater efforts to strengthen mother-tongue proficiency, especially among young people. This is a way to promote better understanding between communities to reduce the spread of race, religion and royalty (3R) issues.
Many of the 3R-related discussion is seen on social media today and are mostly caused by lack of understanding different cultures, language and histories.
He explained that language is more than just a tool for communication. It is also community’s identity, heritage, and values, which helps people to understand their own background better while respecting others.
Language as a Bridge between Communities
YB Yuneswaran said that Malaysia has about 130 languages, reflecting the country’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity. He said diversity must be seen as Malaysia’s strength than a division.

According to him learning one’s mother language does not prevent a person from learning Bahasa Melayu or other languages. Instead it helps to gain deeper appreciation of their own culture while becoming open to understand other community.
From his own experience, YB Yuneswaran said as a Indian Malaysian who studied Chinese and national school streams, he believes mother language proficiency can help with learning other languages.

YB Yuneswaran said the role of National Unity Ministry under 13th Malaysia Plan, including efforts to strengthen nation-building with understanding and mutual respect among Malaysians. Unity starts when people are willing to learn more on other cultures, traditions and history. He believes this can build a better relationships and create a united society.
