A Malaysian teacher was over the moon after he received good news on winning a Bresser 90/1200 refractor telescope equipped with a digital camera, eyepiece and solar foil at the International Astronomical Union (IAU) global outreach project – Telescope for All 2021.

Vadivelan Sinnasamy, a Science teacher at SJK (T) Jugra, Banting, Selangor has made us proud by helping Malaysia shine a light on the global stage. Coordinated by the National Planetarium, the competition was held virtually in May due to the current pandemic.

Despite devoting all his energy to the student’s future, Vadivelan’s out-of-the-box essay writing in the Science field has garnered the attention of the judges. His valiant efforts have finally paid off, and his dream to help underprivileged students has eventually come true.

The humble teacher has proven that;

No matter where you hail from or who you are, nothing can stop you from accomplishing your goals and conquering the world.

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, each telescope will be equipped with a digital camera so that outreach professionals and teachers could conduct experiments and frequently demonstrate them through virtual classes until face-to-face interactions are safe.

The Telescopes for All programme provides impoverished communities across the world with telescopes signed by astronauts and scientists, including Nobel Prize winners. The initiative seeks to widen the perspectives of children, adults, and educators by igniting an interest in science and promoting awareness of the importance of equitable opportunities in astronomical fields. The project has received 225 submissions from 54 countries with the continuous support of the IAU National Outreach Coordinators (NOCs).

This prestigious project was conducted in partnership with Sterren Schitteren Voor Iedereen (Stars Shine for Everyone — SSVI) and Leiden University/Universe Awareness (UNAWE).

To mention a few, the selected projects will provide telescopes to underserved regions in Poland, assist in addressing educational gaps and improving access to STEM for women and girls in Botswana and Mauritius, reach rural areas in Malaysia, and refugee camps in Jordan.

Congratulations on your achievement of becoming the Malaysian winner of the Telescope for All 2021 project!
