Indian para-badminton star and Tokyo 2020 Paralympics gold medallist, Pramod Bhagat, has been banned for 18 months, ruling him out of the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed the suspension on 13th August 2024 following his breach of anti-doping regulations.

The suspension stems from Pramod’s failure to comply with the BWF’s anti-doping whereabouts, having committed three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period. On 1st March 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Anti-Doping Division found him in violation of these regulations. Pramod appealed the decision to the CAS Appeals Division, but his appeal was rejected on 29th July 2024. His suspension will last until 1st September 2025, effectively sidelining him from the Paralympic Games in Paris.

Pramod Bhagat’s Achievements

Pramod’s absence from the Paris Paralympics is a significant blow to India’s medal prospects. The 36-year-old SL3 athlete made history at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics by winning the gold medal in the men’s singles SL3 category, marking the first time an Indian had won gold in badminton at the Paralympics. His victory over Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell in the final was a landmark achievement, bringing India its fourth gold medal at the Games.

In addition to his Paralympic success, Pramod’s is a five-time World Champion, having equaled the legendary Lin Dan’s record with his fifth title in February 2023 at the World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. He is also a two-time Asian Games gold medallist and is currently ranked world No. 3 in his category.

Impact and Reactions

The suspension is a significant setback for Pramod, who was expected to be a strong competition at the Paris Paralympics. Indian para-badminton head coach Gaurav Khanna expressed his disappointment, stating

“It is extremely sad and unfortunate. He was a sure shot medal for India at the Paralympics, but he is a fighter and I am sure he will come back stronger.”

Pramod journey from a young boy affected by polio to becoming one of the world’s top para-badminton players is nothing short of inspirational. Despite this setback, there is hope that he will return to the sport with the same determination that has characterized his career so far.

Pramod Bhagat’s suspension is a sobering reminder of the strict regulations that athletes must adhere to in the world of competitive sports. While his absence will be felt at the Paris Paralympics, Pramod’s legacy as a inspiration in Indian para-badminton remains intact. The Indian sports community will undoubtedly be behind him as he navigates this challenging period, with the hope that he will return stronger and continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
