After a lengthy break, we’ve returned with another movie recommendation for you to enjoy this weekend. I realize it must have been exhausting for many, as most of you have started work as before the pandemic, so here is a movie you can just relax and watch.

Netflix has released a fresh list of kollywood and bollywood movies, and this time we’ll be highlighting Etharkum Thuninthavan in particular.

After a very successful movie like Jai Bhim and Soorarai Potru, Suriya stars in an action thriller movie like Etharkum Thuninthavan.   This film is also available on Netflix in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada dubbed versions. We know why Jai Bhim touched people’s hearts: it was not done only to exalt his renown, but rather to emphasize the narrative of social justice.

Similarly, this film has a social message, which is why it is worth mentioning and watching. I was first perplexed when watching the early portions of the film, but it all comes together towards the end.

Suriya’s role in the film is portrayed as “Etharkum Thuninthavan”, which means “daredevil for everything.”

Kannabiran (Surya), a lawyer, strives for justice and has a soft spot for girls who address him as “anna,” which means “brother.” That’s because he had a sister who was raped and murdered when she was very young. It wounded him terribly that he treats girls who refer to him as brother with affection.

The plot revolves around Inba (Vinay Rai), a prominent guy who recruits young boys to entice college-aged girls into romances, and then abuses the girls to earn favour with powerful individuals and politicians. This film appears to be inspired on the Pollachi sexual assault case in 2019, which involves rapes and extortion from young women.

We all know how much Suriya values women and how much of a gentleman he is. We’ve heard it from his co-stars as well as his adoring wife, Jyothika. With that quality, Suriya was not only acting with such character; he was actually exhibiting his true nature.

Even if some fans and reviewers claim that this movie is a flop and that Suriya could have picked a better script for his first release in three years, I’d say that this movie nevertheless gets the attention of many since it focuses on a social message that is extremely essential nowadays.

This film focuses not only giving justice to women who have been victims of such heinous crimes, but also demonstrating that for a man to be able to respect a woman, it begins with from a home. It is not always about women, but about men who take advantage of them by claiming them to be the weaker sex.

We can comprehend the sorrow from a woman’s perspective, as well as how a boy should be raised at home to respect a girl.

In the movie, there is a really profound dialogue;

“Un vakkrathe vide, en udambu aabasamanathu illengrathe ellaam ponnungalum sernthu ninnu sollanum”

That is to say, my body is not more obscene than your perversion. Surya asserts emphatically in that scenario that women should not be embarrassed, but rather the male who has done this to her. It was intense to witness how a husband consoles and supports his wife to face the consequences with courage.

Regarding the actors, Suriya gave a terrific performance and, more significantly, addressed an essential sensitive issue, as anticipated. Priyanka Mohan has done her job well, with adorable chemistry  with Suriya in the first half and a strikingly new personality in the second.

Though implausible, Sathyaraj and Saranya Ponvannan perform admirably as overly liberal parents. The family’s comedy is intended to entertain the audience.
