Tun S. Samy Vellu, renowned for his long-standing service as Minister of Works and other key ministerial roles, as well as his leadership as the President of the Malaysian Indian Congress, has left an indelible mark on the country’s political and infrastructural landscape. He played a pivotal role in the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), serving as its 7th President from October 1979 to December 2010. He holds the record as the longest-serving MIC president, with a tenure of 31 years, and was one of the longest-serving Cabinet ministers, having been in the Cabinet for 29 years.

Tun Samy Vellu served as a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly to develop and enrich the Malaysian Indian community, acting as their strong advocate. He made significant efforts to ensure that every Indian student had access to education, recognizing it as the essential tool for uplifting the community. In pursuit of this goal, Tun Samy Vellu undertook the extraordinary task of establishing a university specifically for Indian students to continue their education.

As the former President of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), Tun Samy Vellu founded the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED), which functions as the educational arm of the MIC. The institute’s primary role is to provide the necessary resources and support for deserving and needy Indian students to access education, thereby enabling them to achieve their full potential and contribute to the community’s advancement.
