Tun S. Samy Vellu, renowned for his long-standing service as Minister of Works and other key ministerial roles, as well as his leadership as the President of the Malaysian Indian Congress, has left an indelible mark on the country’s political and infrastructural landscape. He played a pivotal role in the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), serving as its 7th President from October 1979 to December 2010. He holds the record as the longest-serving MIC president, with a tenure of 31 years, and was one of the longest-serving Cabinet ministers, having been in the Cabinet for 29 years.
Tun Samy Vellu served as a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly to develop and enrich the Malaysian Indian community, acting as their strong advocate. He made significant efforts to ensure that every Indian student had access to education, recognizing it as the essential tool for uplifting the community.
