Murthy Subramaniam, who has been serving as the commander for the Lumut Naval Base, was inaugurated as Captain this Tuesday by the leader of the Lumut Navy, Dato Abu Bakar Bin Muhammad Najis. The newly promoted Captain Murthy, who received his primary education in the Sg.Siput Mahatma Gandhi Kalasalai, is the son of a hard-working rupper tapper. During the ceremony, Captain Murthy Subramaniam took his official oath in service to the nation and the crown. Murthy’s father, Subramaniam Ramalu, and his mother, Ponaveswari Raaman, along with other navy officers, were present at the official event.
After finishing his SPM on July 7, 1994, the then 18-year-old Captain Murthy made the decision to join the Royal Malaysian Navy at Lumut Naval Base to serve his nation. In the span of his 29-year career, Captain Murthy has dedicatedly and diligently worked hard, gaining the opportunity to operate ships. He has so far been the captain of three ships and an important officer on eight ships. The 48-year-old Captain Murthy has expressed that he is completely swelled with pride at his inauguration as Captain, for it feels like a great recognition for all the hard work he has exerted for nearly three decades in the royal navy.
The Lumut Naval Base, established in 1973, is the largest naval base in Malaysia and, since 1984, also operates as the headquarters for the Royal Malaysian Navy. The first Malaysian Chief of the Royal Malaysian Navy was Rear Admiral (Rtd) Tan Sri Dato’ Seri K. Thanabalasingam, who began his term on December 1, 1967. Despite Thanabalasingam only being 31 at the time, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, in an effort to Malayanize the Malaysian navy and air force, gave him the trusted position of Chief of the Royal Malaysian Navy. Previously, Thanabalasingam served for the British Royal Malayan Nation under the control of British colonists. It was after finishing his studies at Britannia Royal Naval College in Darthmouth, England, that he decided to join the Malayan-owned Malayan Navy in 1958.
